Sigmund Abeles and William Eickhorst
Sigmund Abeles taught at the University of New Hampshire from 1970 until 1987, at which time he was elected Professor Emeritus. He still creates new works of art, as well as offering master classes at the celebrated Art Students League of New York and The National Academy School as well. During his tenure at UNH he donated many works of art to this Museum, by his hand as well as works by other artists.
This 1987 etching by William Eickhorst was donated by Abeles to the Museum of Art (then The Art Gallery) and accessioned into the Museum’s permanent collection in 1991. Both men have been successful educator/artists who have worked in the Northeast, though their work has been shown internationally. The linear quality and quirky conceptual rigor of the piece would have been of strong appeal to Abeles, whose own horse is represented in multiple exposures in the print and etched plate shown here.
