Admission Standards and Criteria

Our admission criteria are consistent with those of the Graduate School. Students interested in one of the programs will be required to apply to the UNH Graduate School. The program faculty will review the files to determine eligibility.

We require a minimum GPA of 3.0 but we will consider undergraduate students with exceptional experience or other mitigating factors. We do require a minimum TOEFL of 550 for non native English students.

Since Materials Science is an interdisciplinary field, we select students from Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Biology and other engineering and science related disciplines. A suitable undergraduate program should ideally contain:

  • Multivariable Calculus and Differential Equations
  • Two semesters of university (calculus-based) Physics
  • One semester of Thermodynamics or Physical Chemistry
  • One semester of Computer Programming
  • One semester each of Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer or two semesters of Solid Mechanics
  • One semester of Materials Science

Faculty are available to evaluate each student's undergraduate curriculum to identify any areas that need more depth or any areas that may satisfy one of the focus areas in our program.

Degree Programs

Here at UNH, we offer students three Materials Science Graduate level programs:
  • Master of Science in Materials Science with a thesis
  • Master of Science in Materials Science with one extra course and a project
  • Ph.D in Engineering with the Materials Science option
