Last month we gave you readers the lowdown on some inexpensive kicks near campus. This time we thought we'd hit you up with some on-campus opportunities you may or may not have known you could dip your toes into. So if seeking out places to go or activities to join isn't your forte here are a few ideas to get you started handed to you on a silver platter…well, okay, on this fun shiny magazine paper:
CFAR
The Center for Academic Resources is probably as foreign a resource to you as it was to me. Incredibly enough, there IS a place on campus to print from clusters for free!! But that is hardly the guts and glory of CFAR. The center, located in the Wolff House, offers tutoring to UNH students in a variety of classes, and even counseling from peers such as yourselves for personal and academic concerns you may be experiencing. The staff is dedicated to helping students enjoy learning by shedding light on issues such as time-management, test-taking, and note-taking. CFAR also hosts GRE courses in four-week sessions for two hours each week.
Intramural Sports
Whether you love sports, or just like to indulge in watching men in tight sportswear, like I do, you probably already know that sporting events are included in your student activities fee (God bless it!). But, if you feel that you'd rather play the games than watch them why not join an intramural team? UNH has an entire web site (http://campusrec.unh.edu/intramurals/index.asp) dedicated to the joining and forming of intramural sports ranging from competitive to recreational. Enter the web site to find your favorite sport and sign up!
Current Issues Lecture Series
Lectures?? You might be thinking I'm a crazy nerd to actually offer up the idea of voluntarily attending a lecture series during your free time, but give me a second to state my case. These lecture series are not what you think. The MUB surprisingly finds extremely entertaining people to grace us with their knowledge, including everything from sex, the controversy of video games, the effects of scary movies, UFO's, all the way to the why we curse. Located in the MUB theatres, this is not your average class lecture…take a chance and check it out, I mean what do you have to lose…
Outdoor Equipment Rentals
Have a love for the outdoors but your tent just doesn't fit in the dorm room? The Campus Recreation Center answers your camping and outdoor-loving prayers by offering reasonable rental rates for equipment from 6-person tents to kayaks to snow shoes. Rates range between daily, weekend, and weekly use. Definitely a great way to spice up your winter and get some extra exercise!!
Yoga
Relaxing your mind and easing your senses can be as easy as walkin' down to Health Services. They offer free yoga classes Mondays and Wednesdays and Meditation classes Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Both classes might be just what you need to escape the stress and strain of classes…well, at least for an hour. And, in case you've got a knot the size of Texas in your back that deep breathing and cleansing your mind alone won't cure, they also offer Massage Therapy for $30 for students.
Traditional Jazz Series
Unless you circulate the PCAC often, meticulously reading the flyers on the walls, you wouldn't notice all the numerous jazz performances taking place there. For everyone who loves to indulge in the sounds of live music there is an array of musical performances each month. In particular, the Traditional Jazz Series focuses on Jazz musicians outside of the UNH program. Performances cost $6 for students and you can check the dates as they go up on the music department web site (about once a month). Just because the title might not sound so flashy don't be discouraged, it's some incredible music…besides, like my mother always says, "A little culture never hurt anyone"!
