Safety Procedures

The UNH London Program is committed to promoting students' safety while they are in residence at Regent's College. To that end, we have established these procedures:
1. We ask that all students register online with the US State Department before leaving for the UK. You must have your passport and flight numbers before you can so do.
2. As a condition of being in the program, all students without exception are required to own a mobile phone that is compatible with European phone networks. The director of the program in London, Professor Eleanor Hight, will collect phone numbers from all UNH students (and make that list available to Professor Douglas Lanier, the London program coordinator in the States, and to Joy Winston, program administrative assistant). Professor Hight will also give her phone number to students, should they need to contact her. We will ask students to take their phones with them wherever they travel.
(Since almost all American phones will not operate on European phone networks, almost all students purchase their phones upon arrival in London. If you purchase a phone in the States and it will not operate in London, we will require you to buy a second phone.)
3. At the opening orientation (given shortly after students arrive in London), Professor Hight will explain contact procedures in case of an emergency, and she will distribute a wallet-size card on which those instructions are printed. She will ask students to check in with her by phone in case of an emergency, even if students also call home.
4. Regent's College will issue an electronic passcard to each student upon arrival. This passcard will allow students to enter and exit the campus through turnstiles that are manned by attendants 24 hours a day. The campus is also equipped with closed-circuit cameras throughout the public areas. Because Regents' College is a secure campus, we require all UNH London Program students without exception to live on-campus.
5. When students travel outside the London metropolitan area, we require that they let us know of their whereabouts by following two procedures:
a. First, students are required to sign out at the reception desk in Reid Hall (the main residence hall) when they leave. They only need do so when traveling outside the greater London area.
b. Second, we ask that before traveling, students send Professor Hight an e-mail detailing their travel details (airline or train, number of flight, times of departure and arrival, destination), and their rough itinerary.
6. In case of an emergency, we will do our best to supply you information from our Program office at UNH in Durham. The number is (603) 862-3962, and Joy Winston, our administrative assistant, can take your call during normal business hours (8-4:30, M-F). After those normal business hours during an emergency, we will try to put a message on our Program office phone letting you know contact information. Also, after business hours, you can call UNH Dispatch at (603) 862-1427, which will patch you through to the appropriate number. Please do not use the UNH Dispatch number except in the case of a genuine emergency (serious injury, sexual assault, terrorist activity); the Provost's Office has authorized a $200 fee for frivolous calls.
In an emergency, we ask that you not call Professor Hight directly in London (unless we've directed you to do so), for calling her may tie up her phone and prevent us or students from contacting her. We also suggest that students check their e-mails as soon as they can for additional safety information and instructions.
Those who follow our safety procedures and who use common sense will minimize the likelihood that they will encounter problems while on the UNH London Program.
