The purpose of Pi Delta Phi is:
(1) to recognize outstanding scholarship in the French language and its literatures,
(2) to increase the knowledge and appreciation of Americans for the cultural contributions of the French-speaking world, and
(3) to stimulate and to encourage French and francophone cultural activities. Students are elected to the chapter by the UNH French faculty.
Requirements include having completed 3 or more 600- or 700-level courses in French at the time of election, having achieved a certain grade point average in French and overall (the required average changes depending on whether the student is a sophomore, junior or senior), and receiving a positive recommendation from members of the faculty regarding the student's commitment to French and his/her character.
Annual Cultural Service Project:
Each year since its founding, the MU XI chapter of Pi Delta Phi has undertaken a cultural service project.
Chapter projects have included fund-raising efforts to purchase trees for the gardens at Versailles, restore the ramparts of the château de Saumur, place a plaque on a building in Portsmouth used by French military officers who participated in the American War of Independence, restore the château de Lunéville, support students and faculty in the French program at Dillard University in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina, restore a statue in the gardens at Versailles, and place plaques on two seats in The Music Hall in Portsmouth, NH honoring French dramatist and novelist Alexandre Dumas père and New Orleans-born French playwright Victor Séjour, In 2008, they helped the city museum in Pézenas, France acquire le fauteuil de Molière. In 2009, they assisted in the restoration of a municipal theater in Brienon-sur-Armançon. With the money raised in 2010, the chapter is able to help in the rebuilding of schools in Haiti and make it easier for the young people of Haiti to look toward a brighter future.
