Josiah Ober holds the Constantine Mitsotakis Chair in the School of Humanities and Sciences and is Chairman of the Department of Political Science at Stanford University. He divides his time and academic appointment between the Departments of Classics and Political Science, and holds a courtesy appointment in Philosophy. He writes and teaches courses on various topics conjoining Greek history, classical philosophy, and political theory and practice. Ober is the author of many books for both academic and popular audiences. The most recent of these is Democracy and Knowledge: Innovation and Learning in Classical Athens, which was published by Princeton University Press in 2008. In addition to his ongoing work on the theory of democracy and the politics of knowledge and innovation, he is developing a project on the world of the Greek city-states and other extensive ecologies of states.
