Music and Language in Italy

May 23 - June 22, 2013

This is a one-month, 7-credit program primarily for music majors. Students will earn 3 credits in an upper level music theory course (MUSI 781W Analysis: Form and Structure) and 4 credits in Elementary Italian (ITAL 401). After a three day period of orientation and settling into their apartments, students will have music and language classes during the morning, five days a week for four weeks. Much of the afternoons, evenings and weekends will be spent exploring the beautiful city and surroundings of Ascoli Piceno of Le Marche and getting to know its friendly inhabitants. A group trip to Rome is planned within the month, with a concert and major cultural sites on the agenda. Other shorter trips, including visits to the Adriatic coast, will also take place.
N.B.: MUSI 781W is writing intensive and has a prerequisite of MUSI 572 Theory II or permission of the instructor. A major analytical paper, i.e. final project, will be due three weeks after the end of the program to allow for more time to explore Italy during the 4 weeks of the program.
