Linguistics 719:Sociolinguistics
Course Description
We'll examine the way spoken language varies according to the social
characteristics of its speakers. Speech variation according to age, sex,
ethnicity, linguistic attitude, style, location, time, social status, and
network membership will be explored. Quantitative analysis methods will be
introduced and the relationship between sociolinguistics and theoretical
linguistics, especially phonology, examined. Ways this information is useful to
teachers will be discussed.
Students will have brief textbook readings and more extensive readings from a
collection of recent research publications in the field. These will be discussed
in class and used as a basis for research projects investigating some aspect of
linguistic variation. Details can be found in the syllabus.
