LING/ENGL 405 Honors students (Nagy)
There are 3 ways in which Honors students in this course will distinguish themselves from other students. To earn honors you must satisfactorily do all of the following:
- Come to each class with at least one question or comment prepared for discussion.
- Select 5 additional homework problems to complete, from the list below. Figure out a way to make your answers more in depth than for regular assignments. How could you expand the question? And the answers? You'll need to be creative. These may require you to read additional
sections in the textbook (use the index to figure out where the info is).
- Introduction (Ch. 1): #12, 14
- Brain & Language (Ch. 2): 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14 (Some of
these need to wait until after the syntax & morphology chapters have
been covered).
- Morphology (Ch. 3): #8, 9, 17
- Syntax (Ch. 4): #12, 13, 16, 17, 18
- Meaning (Ch. 5): #7
- Phonetics (Ch. 6): #13, 14, 15, 16
- Phonology (Ch. 7): #7, 9, 10, 14, 16, 19, 20, 21
- Animal communication (Ch. 8): #2, 3, 10, 13
- Language processing: Humans & Computers (Ch. 9): #3, 4, 5, 6, 11
- Language in society (Ch. 10): #14
- Language change (Ch. 11): #7, 10
- Your papers will be more in depth, drawing connections between your
own research and at least one of the topics you explored in #2.
In order to smoothly accomplish these (especially #2 and #3), you need to
come talk to me outside of class some time in the first month of the term. We will discuss your
interests and come up with a good approach and research topic so you can get
a head start on your project. You can do this either during my office hours
or by appointment at another time, but it's your responsibility to set this
up and keep on top of things.
To make a course "honors" and to ensure the proper recognition for honors work in their major, students must submit a Change of Honors Designation form to the Registrar before the end of the add/drop period (the third Friday of the semester). More information, and the Change of Honors Designation form, are at:
http://www.unh.edu/honors-program/registration.html.
