The Linguistics Major at UNH

The requirements for the linguistics major, as of Fall 2006, are as follows:
  1. LING 405 or 505: Introduction to Linguistics (Note on Gen. Ed. requirements) (505 was renumbered to 405 in 2005.)
  2. LING 605: Introduction to Linguistic Analysis
  3. ONE COURSE IN HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS:
    CLAS 506: Introduction to Comparative and Historical Linguistics
    ENGL 752: History of the English Language
    GERM 733: History and Structure of the German Language
    ITAL 733: History and Development of the Italian Language
    RUSS 733: History and Development of the Russian Language
    SPAN 733: History of the Spanish Language
  4. LING 793: Phonetics and Phonology
  5. LING 794: Syntax and Semantic Theory
  6. Two years' college study (or equivalent) of one foreign language (see choices in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures) or American Sign Language (offered through the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders).
  7. ONE OF THE FOLLOWING COGNATE SPECIALITIES:
    One year college study (or equivalent) of a second foreign language from a different language family or subfamily. See the Department of Literatures, Languages and Cultures website and the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders website for options. (Old English may count as the second foreign language if the first foreign language is not in the Germanic family. To meet the 2-semester requirement, the Beowulf course should be taken as well. See course descriptions on the English Department website.)
    PSYC 712: Psychology of Language, with its pre-requisite, either Psych 513: Cognitive Psychology, or PSYCH 512: Psychology of Primates. (See the Psychology Dept. website for course descriptions.)
    PHIL 745: Philosophy of Language, with its pre-requisite, either Phil 412: Beginning Logic or Phil 550: Symbolic Logic. (See the Philosophy Dept. website for course descriptions.)
    CS 765: Introduction to Computational Linguistics. Students entering this class should have a good background in the programming languages LISP and/or SCHEME. (See the Undergraduate Catalog for course descriptions.)
  8. Three additional courses (Linguistics electives) from the list below:

NOTE: For students declaring the Linguistics major in Fall 2006 or later, the major requirements have changed slightly. Students who were already enrolled in the major will not be required to fulfill the new requirements, but may choose to do so. The change is to substitute a Capstone Experience in place of the third Linguistics elective.
