UNH Professor Emeritus Named 2011 Robert Frost Medalist

Charles Simic, University of New Hampshire professor emeritus, has been named the 2011 recipient of the Poetry Society of America’s Robert Frost Medal, presented annually for “lifetime achievement in poetry.” The award is the organization’s highest award, and previous winners include Wallace Stevens, Gwendolyn Brooks, Allen Ginsberg, Marianne Moore, and Lucille Clifton, who was the 2010 Centennial recipient.

 

UNH Instructor’s Book Analyzes ‘Chick Lit’ Genre

Without Carrie Bradshaw, women may never have discovered Manolo Blahniks. As one of the best-known characters in “Sex in the City,” Bradshaw encapsulates the typical postfeminist, career-minded, single gal, a gal who a University of New Hampshire instructor says is part of the explosive popularity of the genre “chick lit.”

 

Polasky Publishes Book

Janet Polasky, Presidential Professor of History and Women’s Studies, has published a new book, "Reforming Urban Labor: Routes to the City, Roots in the Country."

 

UNH Composer Wins First Prize in Longfellow Chorus International Composers Competition; Premiers February 27

Christopher Kies, professor of music, has won first prize in choral composition in the 2011 Longfellow Chorus International Composers Competition. Kies’ “The Musical Sufferings of John Kreisler” is based on Longfellow’s 1838 translation of E. T. A. Hoffmann’s story about a put-upon, Burgundy-sipping piano teacher and his musically flawed, yet lovable students.
