Make A Gift to the College of Liberal Arts
How has support from alumni and friends made a difference?
Faculty research, special student projects and events, lectures and performances by prominent scholars, and conference travel: these are just some of the many ways that generous support of the College of Liberal Arts contributes to the creation of scholarly works and the richness of the learning experience at UNH. Our goal is to strive for greater excellence, and financial support helps create the kinds of opportunities that make our College vibrant and our students intellectually alive and engaged. Here are some recent examples of gift dollars in action:
Charles Putnam, Co-Director of Justiceworks and instructor of Justice Studies, directed a team of UNH student lawyers, judges, witnesses, and defendants at a national Mock Trial tournament at Tufts University. The UNH team not only placed, but one of their lawyers, Laura Thayer, won top honors for best attorney at the tournament. Putnam and the Mock Trial Team were able to travel to Tufts through the generous support of UNH Foundation gifts.
Cathy Frierson, Professor of History, has been researching her new book on the experience of orphan survivors of Stalin’s gulag. Frierson’s research took her to Russia where she conducted interviews with the survivors about their experiences reintegrating into Russian society. Her trip was made possible by the financial support of alumni and friends. Frierson has written several other books on Russian history and is a leading scholar in her field.
David Ripley, Professor of Music, coordinated several events around UNH’s world premier of an opera by New Hampshire composer Amy Beach. One such event was a guest lecture by a renowned musicologist and a special performance of the opera at the Peterborough Playhouse in Peterborough, N.H., to honor Beach’s relationship with the famed MacDowell Colony. Student performers were able to travel to Peterborough for this rare opportunity through the support of generous contributions from alumni and friends.
Alynna Lyon, Assistant Professor of Political Science, attended a United Nations conference in New York. Lyon’s scholarship and teaching focus is on world politics, peacekeeping, conflict resolution, and international organizations. In order to keep her finger on the pulse of world politics, Lyon needed to be where the action was. Support from alumni made her trip possible, and Lyon’s students reaped the benefit of what she learned.
