Spanish & Portuguese/Declaring a Major

Colleen Flaherty

Colleen Flaherty, double major in Spanish and Political Science, spent a summer tracing the evolution of Chilean civil society from the end of Pinochet's dictatorship to the present, questioning whether the citizenry had truly recovered from Pinochet's rule.

Students entering the University as first-year or transfer students may declare the Spanish major as part of the Admissions process.

If you are a continuing student interested in declaring Spanish as a major, you will need to complete the change of program process outlined below.

When you bring your file and change of program form to the Spanish department, you must make an appointment through the administrative assistant to speak with an academic advisor. Please note that all majors must spend at least one semester in a Spanish-speaking country.

The change of program process

Obtain a yellow change of program form from the Registrar's Office or download one here. If you are an undeclared major, you should meet with your undergraduate advisor at Hood House to start the process. If you are a declared major, you should meet with your major advisor to start the process. Your advisor will sign you out of your current major and provide you with your student academic file. Continue to obtain appropriate signatures on the form following the order listed on the bottom of the form. Your final step will be to submit your completed form to the Liberal Arts Dean's Office in 110 Murkland Hall.
