Six-Week Summer Study Abroad

The University of New Hampshire offers a six-week summer immersion program sponsored by the Institute of San Joaquín de Flores in Costa Rica. The program combines two Spanish courses, cultural fieldtrips and optional weekend trips. Classes meet daily Monday through Friday. Students will earn the equivalent of up to eight credit hours upon the completion of the program. Courses can be used to fulfill requirements for Gen Ed, Spanish major or minor.

Program Location

San Joaquín de Flores is a charming, colorful and quaint colonial town located 10 miles from San José; only a 15-minute ride by local transportation to the town of Heredia where the Universidad Nacional is located. Everything can be reached on foot and along the way students can visit historic landmarks and buildings from the 18th century. It is easy to explore the Costa Rican flora and fauna outside of San Joaquín de Flores.

Housing

Students are housed with a Costa Rican family. Housing includes three meals per day and laundry service.

Course Offerings

The program offers courses at intermediate and advanced language courses (SPAN 503, 504, 631, 632), a variety of culture and literature courses (e.g., SPAN 526, 647, 648, 650, 653, 654), and Spanish for nursing careers. All courses are taught in Spanish and by professors from the Universidad de Costa Rica and the Universidad Nacional.

Eligibility

The program is open to students who have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and good standing in conduct of study abroad participation.
