Bienvenue!

Located in the province of Brittany, Brest was the maritime capital of France in the seventeenth century and has a long history as a commercial and naval port. Largely rebuilt after World War II, Brest is today a sister port city of Portsmouth, NH.

Brest can be reached from Paris by the TGV-Atlantique train or by air.

The Program

The UNH summer language program in Brest is open to all students, regardless of major, who are interested in improving their French or progressing more quickly through the standard language curriculum. Students enroll at the Centre International d'Etude des Langues (CIEL) where they may take four to eight weeks of intensive intermediate or advanced language courses. Classes meet daily Monday through Friday for a total of 24 hours per week. Students may elect either intermediate and/or advanced French, depending on their level of preparation and length of stay. They will earn four (4) credits for each intermediate- or advanced-level course successfully completed.

Housing

Students are housed with local families. Housing includes breakfast and dinner Monday through Friday and all meals on the weekend. Weekday lunches may be taken at the CIEL cafeteria or at local cafés for a reasonable additional cost.

CIELCourses

Students may enroll in Fren. 585;
Fren. 586; Fren. 635; Fren. 683;
Fren. 684 and/or Fren 695 depending on their previous level of French study and grades. Please consult the UNH online catalog for specific details on the pre-requisites for these courses.

All students are required to take the UNH French placement exam at the time of their application, and at the conclusion of their studies in Brest, and report their scores to the UNH program director in order to receive credit for this program.

Students are also required to furnish the UNH director a copy of their "attestation" from CIEL.

Admissions Requirements

All students must have a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5 or better and the permission of their advisor when applying for this program. They must have sophomore standing at the time they begin the program and should have a declared major. They must also have a clear conduct record. Students 16-18 years old may be eligible for this program. Contact the program director for specific requirements or if you have questions about your eligibility.

Application Deadlines

Applications will be accepted until April 1 for the June session and until April 15 for the July session. However, students are urged to apply as early as possible so that housing arrangements can be confirmed and so that they may make their travel plans at the lowest cost.

Fees and Expenses

A comprehensive UNH fee is due upon registration for all courses. This fee covers UNH and CIEL tuition, course texts, housing and meals as described above, plus UNH technology and administrative fees. Other expenses include round-trip travel, optional insurance, excursions and sports programs, and miscellaneous living costs. At this time, the French government requires all students to obtain a short-stay (Schengen) visa. Students will have to pay the expenses related to that as well.

Brest portTravel and Insurance

Students must make their own travel arrangements. Normally they will fly to Paris and then take the TGV Atlantique from the Gare de Montparnasse to Brest. They must arrive no sooner than the Sunday afternoon prior to the beginning of classes and depart no later than the Saturday afternoon following the conclusion of classes. All students participating in this program are required to purchase an international student I.D. card, which offers some medical insurance coverage. Additional medical insurance and trip cancellation and repatriation insurance are left to each individual's discretion. The French government may require additional health insurance coverage.
