Bienvenue à Montréal! 

Located in Southwestern Québec, only 5 and a half hours from UNH, Montréal is the second largest city in Canada and the biggest francophone city in the world after Paris, France! So why not brush up your French in this vibrant urban center over January?

Offered in January Term: January 4 through 20, 2012.


Curriculum

FREN 503 Q: Intermediate French I in Montreal, Quebec. 4-credit course at the Université de Québec à Montréal (UQAM). This course is the same course as 503 on campus with the addition of 9 hours of conversation with a native speaker, 20 hours of field trips, and a home stay for full immersion. Conducted in French. Review of grammar with emphasis on the development of reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, and on culture. Discussion in French of literary and cultural readings. Labs and films. Special fee. (3 weeks in January)

FREN 599: Readings in Current Periodicals of Quebec. 4-credit course at the Université de Québec à Montréal (UQAM). This course is an introduction to the culture québecoise with the addition of field trips and a homestay for full immersion. Conducted in French. You will improve your linguistic and cultural proficiency by exploring identity of Quebec through news articles, audio, movies and other multimedia resources. By building upon your language skills in French, you will apply new grammatical structures and vocabulary to examine the historical, social, and political contexts of contemporary Quebec. In addition to language skills and cultural proficiency, you will be developing critical and analytic tools, with a focus on expression your ideas through effective writing and speaking. Special fee. (3 weeks in January)


Faculty

All courses are taught in French by a regular University of New Hampshire faculty and UQAM FFL faculty.


Housing and Meals

For maximum linguistic immersion, students will stay with Francophone host families. The special course fee covers rent and 2 meals per day (breakfast and supper).


Eligibility

Students must by matriculated and have at least 32 hours of credit. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 is required. Students must be in good standing with the University Student Conduct System.


Application and deadlines

Application deadline is typically in early November for the January Term. Students are encouraged to apply early so that they can make their travel arrangements at the lowest possible cost. 


Tuition and Fees

UNH tuition and course fee cover registration at the University UQAM, mandatory health insurance, excursions, and room and board. Students are responsible for the payment of lunch and travel costs. Other routine expenses include books and supplies, and miscellaneous living costs.


Travel and Insurance

Travel is at the students’ expense. Trip cancellation and repatriation insurance should be arranged by individuals as necessary.
