Inquiry is published annually online (only) in the spring semester at www.unh.edu/Inquiryjournal. The first issue appeared in 2005.
Inquiry publishes articles by UNH undergraduates and recent graduates describing their research findings and experiences in all disciplines. The journal also publishes feature articles and commentaries by UNH students, faculty, staff and alumnae. (See CATEGORIES OF MANUSCRIPTS for details.) Inquiry does not accept works of fiction, poetry or drama. Responses from readers are encouraged, in the form of letters or email messages, and will be posted throughout the year. (See RESPONSES TO INQUIRY)
Inquiry has two principal goals: the first is to share university research and expertise with readers beyond those of any particular discipline. Submissions, therefore, should be written for a general as well as an academic audience. The second goal is to provide student authors and editors with the experience of preparing work for publication. All manuscripts are reviewed by an editorial board of students and staff, who will work with authors on any necessary revisions. (See WRITING FOR INQUIRY)
In each issue of Inquiry we try to present well written articles on a variety of research topics. By the end of September we compile a list of potential authors and their pieces for the next issue, which will appear the following spring (usually in April.) Since most articles and commentaries require a little or extensive rewriting to make them suitable for Inquiry’s audience, authors are asked to make basic revisions by mid-October. (Writing assistants at the Connors Writing Center will help.) This prepares authors to work with staff and student editors in further revising the article as needed.
If you have a paper already written, a research project nearing completion, or an idea for a commentary, the first step is to contact the senior editors at editor.inquiry@unh.edu as soon as possible.
Publication Agreement
Before an article can be published, a PUBLICATION AGREEMENT signed by the author and mentor or principal teacher is required. Hard copies are available at the Hamel Center for Undergraduate Research (Hood House 209) and outside the Inquiry office (Hood House 218).
An author signature verifies that the work submitted is the author’s own, and that the author has read and agrees with the points about responsibility for publication in professional journals, the uses of published work for UNH publicity purposes, and the right of Inquiry staff to edit all submissions. For some commentaries, the signature of the faculty mentor or principal teacher may not be required.
