Brigid C. Casellini Jennifer Lee

Assistant Editor — Clia Goodwin

Goodwin

Assistant editor Clia Goodwin, who earned her doctorate in comparative literature from the University of Illinois, has, she says, a “checkered career.” She has held such varied and interesting jobs as a question editor for Trivial Pursuit games and as a lecturer in the English department at the University of New Hampshire. She also worked at UNH with the Journal of Geophysical Research-Space Physics. However, she has since settled into freelance copyediting, and, as a scholar for the New Hampshire Humanities Council, she lectures and facilitates book discussions in public libraries around the state. She joined Inquiry in the fall of 2010 because she enjoys working with students and helping them improve their writing. Originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Dr. Goodwin lives in Dover, New Hampshire, with her husband. She enjoys studying medieval literature, singing, and gardening. (For the 2012 issue Clia was acting co-senior editor.)

Student Editorial Board — Nias Achorn | Elizabeth Barker | Jacqueline Cordell | Stephen Dunn | Michael Pope | Laura Roach | Katy Sternberger

Achorn

Nias Achorn, of Newfields, New Hampshire, is a graduating senior English literature major who loves to read and write and is also active in the outdoors. A University Honors Program student, he plans to write his thesis on Ernest Hemingway in the spring of 2012. Nias came to the University of New Hampshire as an undeclared student but knew that the school would offer a range of liberal arts courses to interest him. He decided to join Inquiry this year in order to become involved with a university publication and use skills he has learned in his classes. After graduation, Nias would like to get a job with a publisher and see where that leads him, but he has not ruled out graduate school. He knows he would like to continue writing and publish his work.

Barker

She may not be a native of the Granite State, but Elizabeth Barker is no stranger to the area. Born in nearby Eliot, Maine, her love for the University of New Hampshire began at a young age when she was introduced to the University by her mother, a staff member. Once here, her hard work on campus has given UNH every reason to love her back. She is a highly motivated sophomore with a double major in English and political science and is a member of the University Honors Program. As a research assistant for Colonel Lionel Ingram, one of her political science professors, she researches notable political events and edits lecture notes for his classes. She joined Inquiry to improve both her knowledge of the research process and her editing skills. While Lizzy plans on completing her undergraduate degree in 2014, she will be spending an additional year at UNH for a master’s degree in teaching. She hopes then to teach at the high school level in one of her two disciplines. In addition to being active last year in Student Senate, in the coming year she hopes to join the College Democrats. When she is not exercising her mind, she is exercising her body rock climbing and playing soccer.

Cordell

When Jacqueline Cordell is not slicing up the competition on the fencing strip or swinging on the dance floor, she may be found simply enjoying one of her beloved Victorian novels. A graduating senior from Bedford, New Hampshire, Jacqueline is an English literature and linguistics double major who intends to study Old English and British literature in graduate school with the hopes of becoming a university professor. Jacqueline came to the University of New Hampshire because of her familiarity with the students and campus, and she has taken full advantage of the opportunities she has discovered. A University Honors Program student, she has spent her summers doing undergraduate research in collaboration with faculty from the English Department. This year she joined Inquiry in order to see what the last steps of the research process, the editing and publishing components, are all about.

Dunn

Senior Stephen Dunn is originally from Nashua, New Hampshire. He will graduate in May 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in genetics. Stephen works in Dr. James Haney’s lab where he directs the genetics portion of a research project on toxins in local water systems. In 2011, with a University of New Hampshire Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF), he researched cancer and plans on continuing research on cancer and viruses in graduate school. When he is not conducting research, Stephen writes the science column of The New Hampshire, plays piano, skis, and volunteers at the Cocheco Humane Society in Dover. By joining Inquiry he hopes to become prepared for the world of science writing and peer editing.

Pope

Michael Pope of Concord, New Hampshire, is a dual political science and international affairs major at the University of New Hampshire. A University Honors Program student, Michael was a research assistant for Dr. Benjamin Cole following his freshman year. The next year, with an Undergraduate Research Award from UNH, he was part of a project coding regime types and governance structures. He has received an International Research Opportunities Program (IROP) award to travel this coming summer to Belfast, Northern Ireland, to interview and profile former members of the Irish Republican Army. Now a junior, his positive experience with research led Michael to give back to those who made his own experiences possible by joining the Inquiry student editorial board. For relaxation, Michael enjoys surfing—regardless of the weather—at one of the New Hampshire beaches. He chose UNH because of his love of New England and desire to stay close to family.

Roach

Laura Roach, a junior economics major from North Kingston, Rhode Island, has made impressive use of her time at the University of New Hampshire. Not only is she a second-year Inquiry editor and a University Honors Program student, she has also volunteered with AmeriCorps, planned a study abroad to the Middle East, and pursued independent economics research. She spent her time with AmeriCorps providing disaster relief to four devastated cities over the course of a year. A love for editing and writing first drew her to Inquiry, and she somehow manages to find time for concerts, painting, and running, in addition to her busy work schedule.

Sternberger

Katy Sternberger, a junior English/journalism major and French minor, has had a strong foothold in the fields of publishing and editing throughout her college years. She maintains her own website (www.StarWrite.org) that publishes articles for the University of New Hampshire observatory and has interned for Coastal Home magazine. She joined the student editorial board of Inquiry in the fall of 2010 and returned this year so she can continue to help people with their research and writing skills. A longtime resident of Durham, New Hampshire, Katy decided to attend UNH for the resources that she enjoyed growing up and for the acclaim she heard for the English department. She is a University Honors Program student and is considering going to New York City after graduation to earn a publishing certificate to help her pursue an editing career.
