Welcome to Inquiry ‘06
Welcome to the second issue of Inquiry, the online undergraduate research journal of the University of New Hampshire.

Inquiry was created to support the broader academic mission of UNH as a research and public service university. It offers student researchers the opportunity to communicate their experiences and results to general as well as academic audiences—the final and very important step in the research process. UNH funds and otherwise supports research in all the disciplines, and Inquiry seeks to reflect this inclusiveness. In this issue you will find articles ranging from biological and environmental sciences to philosophy and the visual arts. The research process and its reporting are well defined in the sciences, but what about in the arts and humanities? |
Scientific research has its structure of hypothesis, methodology and results. In the fine arts and humanities, however, the process of inquiry and discovery cannot be laid out in advance as clearly as it can be in the sciences. It is more exploratory and nuanced. The research evolves and changes through a process of analysis, interpretation and reflection. This is the creative research faculty in the fine arts pursue, and their students follow their lead. (This is not to say, however, that the sciences are not creative, too.)
Research in any subject is creative and exciting for the researcher. We hope you find that excitement and spirit of inquiry in this and all the issues of Inquiry.
