Curriculum
Many US students are particularly interested in enrolling in performing arts courses, especially dance and music, and in African studies courses, but a wide range of undergraduate courses are available, subject to schedule and enrollment, as well as course prerequisites. Independent study opportunities are also available.
The Aya Centre
The Aya Centre is a single-purpose, multi-service organization designed to enhance the learning experience and cultural awareness of persons traveling to Ghana. The Centre is also committed to contributing to the development of Ghana in particular and Africa in general. UNH has contracted with the Aya Centre to provide a range of services including emergency contact and advising and access to high speed internet and the Centre’s facilities. On a fee-added basis, students can arrange, through the Aya Centre, for excursions to such places as Cape Coast and Kumasi, as well as service-learning opportunities.
Faculty
All courses are taught by University of Ghana faculty in English.
Housing and Meals
Students live in the University of Ghana’s international student dormitories, which provide double and single rooms, cooking facilities, lounges, resident assistants, and a 24-hour staffed front desk. Evening shuttle service is available to and from the accommodations, and a market is adjacent. Students may have the option of having a Ghanaian student as roommate, by request. Students are responsible for their own meals, and they have access to a range of campus dining facilities and dormitory cooking facilities. A market selling most necessities and prepared food is next to the international student accommodations.
Eligibility
UNH students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5, have earned at least 32 credits (at least 16 of which must be from UNH), be in good standing with the Student Conduct System, and have a declared major.
Application and Deadline
Information sessions are held late in the spring semester and early in the fall semester. Students must apply by October 15th in the semester preceding their semester abroad. Orientation sessions for accepted students are held prior to departure.
Tuition & Fees
Compared to many other study-abroad opportunities, the UNH Ghana program is remarkably inexpensive. UNH tuition and a course fee of around $945 cover tuition and housing at the University of Ghana and services provided by the Aya Centre. The University of Ghana does not provide meal service; students are responsible for their own meals, using cooking facilities in their accommodations or local dining options. In addition, students are responsible for airfare (prices range generally from about $1,000 to about $1,600), visas, inoculations and medications, medical insurance, books, and in-country travel and incidentals. Students are required to purchase cell phones. Any excursions or service-learning projects arranged by the Aya Centre will incur additional fees.
Financial Aid & Scholarships, The Ghana Scholarship

The Ghana Scholarship is provided by a generous donation from Ellis Woodward (UNH, class of 1974) and Academic Affairs. Up to two scholarships of $3,000 will be awarded to selected students. In order to be eligible for this scholarship, you must be a UNH student and eligible for financial aid. Your general program application, in addition to your scholarship application, will provide the basis upon which the selection committee makes their decision.
Travel and Insurance
Direct flights to Accra are available from New York and Atlanta, with other routes involving connections in Europe. The Office of International Programmes at the University of Ghana will pick up arriving students and transport them to the university campus. At UNH, program staff will advise students about obtaining visas and medical certificates. When possible, students are encouraged to fly together.
