  • Interdisciplinary Conferences

The Center solicits proposals for $3000 grants to support significant interdisciplinary conferences in the humanities. Any interdisciplinary conference in the humanities is eligible for support. Conferences that connect the humanities to other fields are particularly welcome, as are conferences that serve as a component of larger events. Conferences should be designed by a faculty member, group of faculty, or academic unit; other institutions or organizations may also be involved as cosponsor. Conferences receiving Center support must list the Center as a major sponsor. We will fund up to two conferences each year.

Center funds can be used to support the expenses of featured speakers, publicity, and other costs associated with conducting the conference. Funds will be available at the start of the appropriate academic year although it may be possible for monies to be made available earlier.

Proposals should address the following questions:
What are the goals of the conference?
How significant is the conference topic or theme for research in the humanities?
What is the conference design?
When and where will it be held?
Are there cosponsors?
Who is involved in planning the conference?
How are the qualifications and experiences of the organizers and presenters related to the conference’s goals?
Who are the key presenters, and are they tentatively committed to participate?
How will the conference be promoted and publicized?
What will its budget be, and are there other sources of funding?
Will the results of the conference be disseminated in some form?

Proposals should be no longer than five single-spaced pages. Conference directors should also submit short curriculum vitae. Please submit five copies. A faculty panel established by the Center will review proposals.

  • Programs & Projects Grants

The Center will award as many as four grants of up to $3000 in support of expenses related to research and other humanities endeavors including, but not limited to, public programs, visiting speakers, and curriculum development. Our intention is to be as flexible as possible in support of excellent and creative programs and projects in the humanities. These awards can be carried over into the next fiscal year, although they are intended to fund endeavors that begin in the current academic year.

In the past, such grants have supported travel for research purposes, the acquisition of special research materials, library collection development, visiting speakers, public programs, the purchase of research equipment, technical assistance, conferences, public programs, and other expenses associated with faculty projects in the humanities. The grants might also provide support for interdisciplinary undertakings such as faculty seminars and colloquia. They can provide seed money for projects, particularly those leading to major proposals to outside funding agencies. They can contribute to ongoing projects such as summer institutes for schoolteachers. In sum, Programs and Projects Grants are intended to be responsive to the needs and goals of the faculty.

All full-time faculty are eligible to apply, so long as the project falls within the humanities. A panel of faculty members will review the proposals. To apply, please submit a narrative proposal of between two and four single-spaced pages, detailing the project, providing a plan of work, and situating the endeavor in a humanistic context. Append a budget and a short vita. Please submit five copies of all materials.
