Sick Pool
return to Paid Leave
The Sick Pool, which is optional, is a way to provide for salary
continuation during an extended absence due to illness, injury or maternity
situations. Earned Time hours are converted to Sick Pool on a 1 to 3 ratio
(1 Earned Time hour converts to 3 Sick Pool hours). Rules for use of Sick
Pool are as follows:
- Use of sick pool may only begin on the sixth consecutive workday
of an absence due to illness, injury or other disability. (Family and Medical Leave Act - FMLA may apply).
- A physician's report must be sent to Human Resources along with the request for use of Sick Pool.
- It is not necessary to use all Earned Time before using Sick Pool.
- Sick Pool may be used until exhausted or until one is no longer
disabled.
- Days converted to Sick Pool do not count toward minimum usage.
- Sick Pool is limited to 150 days.
- Earned Time hours may be converted to Sick Pool after completion
of the initial introductory period (six months).
- In May of each year employees have the opportunity to convert their
Earned Time to Sick Pool.
- Sick Pool hours are not payable at termination or retirement.
- Earned Time benefits accrue only during the initial three weeks
(fifteen working days) of Sick Pool usage. Each separate use of the Sick
Pool, however, provides for this continuous earning ability.
