Program Design

Participant distinctions for the Supervising @UNH and Managing @UNH programs are:

  Supervising @UNH
  • First Line Supervisors
  • Novice supervisors making the transition from peer to boss and who would benefit from acquiring foundation skills; veteran front-line supervisors who have not had access to professional development opportunities.
  • Individuals responsible for daily operations.
  • Individuals supervising the performance of OS staff, PAT staff and student employees.
  Managing @UNH
  • New and Veteran mid-level managers.
  • Individuals who have leadership responsibility for their department.
  • Individuals responsible for the development and execution of their department's strategic plan.
  • Individuals who have fiscal responsbility for their department.
  • Individuals who supervise performance primarily of PAT staff.

Supervising @UNH Overarching Aims

  1. To increase leadership capacity at the University of New Hampshire by enlarging the management skills of UNH managers and supervisors.
  2. To support the Academic Plan by increasing managerial and supervisory capacities at UNH, for example, to build support for the following goals:

    "Quality, Integration & Collaboration"

        • Goal #1: The University of New Hampshire will have the highest quality students, faculty, extension educators and staff possible

    "Community and Diversity"

      • Goal #6: The University of New Hampshire will be a collegial and supportive community that values difference of opinions and disagreement along with civility and consensus; and in which all its members are valued for their contributions and are appropriately rewarded.
      • Goal #7: The University of New Hampshire will be a community that actively seeks and welcomes a more diverse faculty, extension educators, staff, and student body, and supports and values diversity.

    "Resourcefulness, Efficiency & Effectiveness"

      • Goal #8: The University of New Hampshire will maximize and diversify resource streams to relieve pressure on tuition and fee rates and provide the resources needed to support its programs and services.
      • Goal #9: The University of New Hampshire will make efficient use of its human, information, financial, natural and other resources, consistent with priorities expressed in the academic plan and with a proper balance between short-term and long-term goals.
  3. To create greater consistency in understanding and application of UNH policies and procedures as they relate to UNH managers and supervisors.

Desired Training Outcomes

  1. Assist new supervisors in making the transition into a new leadership role, in particular, to support the shift from peer to supervisor.
  2. Deepen participant understanding of what it means to be an effective supervisor at the University of New Hampshire.
  3. Deepen participant understanding of and enlarge participant skills in the three dimensions of effective supervision as they apply to the University of New Hampshire.
  4. Deepen collegial relationships among UNH supervisors.
