Orienting New Employees

return to Supervision

Supervisors are responsible for orienting new employees to the job and department. Human Resources will contact the employee relative to benefits enrollment, parking and other campus services.

INTRODUCTION

NEW EMPLOYEE'S ROLE

  • Review of position expectations and position description
  • Review Job Competencies - Introduction with new employee
  • Review performance at 3 month (OS only) and 6 month intervals. Performance evaluation forms are available on the Publications and Forms page of the HR website
  • Importance of his/her job
  • Effect of the position on other areas
  • Effect other areas have on the position
  • Lines of supervision within department

ATTENDANCE

  • Hours of work
  • Department lunch periods
  • How to report absences
  • Department vacation requests
  • How to record time and attendance
  • Attending classes during working hours
  • Discuss curtailed operations - is employee considered "essential" or "non-essential" Personnel

PERSONAL FACILITIES

  • Procedure for getting uniforms (if appropriate)
  • Location of lunch/coffee break area(s)
  • Location of washrooms
  • Personal storage area(s)

PERSONAL CONDUCT

  • Appearance
  • Smoking
  • Personal phone calls
  • Personal mail/e-mail

SAFETY

  • What to do in case of accidents
  • What to do in case of fire
  • Safety rules particular to the department
