LABORATORY TECHNICIAN III

Function of Job:
Under general supervision from a designated supervisor, to perform a wide variety of technical tasks or a limited number of the most complex tests requiring a practical understanding of scientific techniques.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform complex tasks involved in the preparation of culture of specimens.
- Scan and examine slides for the purpose of identifying the kind and source of a variety of cells.
- In accordance with detailed instructions concerning procedures to be followed, perform a limited number of simple chemical tests requiring practical scientific knowledge.
- With responsibility for selecting techniques designed to reveal various characteristics, prepare tissues for histologic examination, employing a limited variety of techniques.
- Using sterile techniques, excise specimens from animals including those which are minute and not easily accessible, and evaluate and report condition of specimens.
- Maintain animal colonies, with responsibility for evaluating condition of animals, administering prescribed food and medicine, recording births, and securing and preparing specimens for review.
- Construct simple laboratory equipment and devices as required.
- May assist in the development of assay or other scientific analyses procedures.
- Prepare more complex solutions, reagents, and media.
- Maintain test and control specimens and cultures according to appropriate procedures, and dispense to students, faculty, and others as requested.
- May collect samples in the field and process for use in the laboratory.
- Maintain research records and/or charts outlining experiments and results.
- Advise and supervise work of laboratory personnel in lower classifications.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:
- High school graduation.
- Manual dexterity.
- Three years of work experience in the scientific techniques appropriate to the field of science and laboratory work requiredby the position or three years of combined work experience and post‑high school technical training related to scientific techniques required by the position.
Additional Desirable Qualifications:
- High school science courses.
- Technical training in scientific techniques beyond minimum qualifications.
- Valid motor vehicle operator's license if required.
