LABORATORY TECHNICIAN II

Function of Job:
Under direct supervision from a designated supervisor, to perform moderately complex technical laboratory work requiring a practical understanding of a limited number of scientific techniques.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare histological specimens, employing a variety of fixing, embedding, and staining techniques.
- Prepare laboratory stains, reagents,‑and chemical solutions in accordance with specific instructions.
- Inoculate a limited variety of specimens for examination and/or use.
- Repair/maintain scientific equipment and fabricate simple laboratory items, as required.
- Feed and care for animals according to prescribed procedures.
- With detailed instruction and review, scan slides in order to identify a limited variety of abnormal cells.
- May perform dissections, with responsibility for identifying/excising a limited number of organs.
- Dispense chemicals, media, stains, dyes, glassware, and other equipment to faculty, staff and students; maintain catalog/inventory of stock items and reorder, as necessary.
- Clean and sterilize glassware and other laboratory equipment.
- See to disposal of cultures and animals, as required.
- Supervise other employees or work study students, as assigned.
- Perform other related duties, as assigned.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:
- High school graduation and one year of work experience in the scientific techniques appropriate to the field of science and laboratory work required by the position or one year of post high school technical training directly related to scientific techniques required by the position.
- Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this job, including heavy work.
- Must be able to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment, as necessary.
Additional Desirable Qualifications:
- High school science courses.
- Technical training in scientific techniques beyond minimum qualifications.
