ENGINEERING DRAFTING SPECIALIST I

Function of Job

Under general supervision from draftsmen of higher level or from supervisor in charge of an operation, to perform technical duties involving skill and experience in drafting and structural, mechanical, electrical, electronic, civil, or other engineering fields.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Prepare drawings and diagrams of mechanical, electrical, or electronic devices, apparatus, and equipment from notes, sketches, and instructions.
  2. Make detailed shop drawings from sketches and layouts of machinery and equipment.
  3. Prepare designs of machinery, equipment, and apparatus from layouts and specified dimensions.
  4. Prepare layouts from wiring and piping diagrams and schematics.
  5. Prepare working drawings and diagrams for water distribution systems, sewers, electrical distribution systems, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, and electrical and mechanical machinery and equipment.
  6. Make detailed drawings from general design drawings, indicating materials, tolerances, and other information necessary to make the detailed drawing clear and complete.
  7. Prepare from field notes general and/or detailed drawings and specs for campus areas including parking lots, streets, and walkways.
  8. Set up, operate, and care for surveying equipment; perform horizontal and vertical control on survey assignments.
  9. Assist in instruction and supervision of draftsmen of lower level as assigned.
  10. Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications: 

  1. Ability to perform technical drafting work requiring a high degree of drafting skill.
  2. High school graduation.
  3. Three years of general experience in engineering drafting work, or university work in an engineering curriculum may be substituted, year for year, up to a maximum of two years. 
  4. Ability to set up, operate, and care for surveyor's equipment if assigned to drafting work in the field of Civil Engineering.

Additional Desirable Qualifications: 

  1. Additional experience in general drafting work.
  2. Additional university course work in an engineering curriculum.
