Function of Job

Under limited supervision from a designated supervisor and/or member of the research staff, to perform with some skill, moderately complex work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electronic equipment and related devices, and to assist in the resolution of routine operations problems. 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Test, disassemble, repair, modify, and calibrate, scientific, electronic components, instruments, and equipment involving the use of meters, vacuum tubes, transistors, capacitors, frequency test units, and transformers.
  2. Perform moderately complex mechanical and electronic layout.
  3. Prepare and modify standard schematics and wiring diagrams.
  4. Perform limited calibration checks and calibrate standard test equipment.
  5. In connection with other duties as required, operate simple machine tools and common electronic instruments and perform skilled soldering.
  6. Participate in data collection and reduction activities.
  7. Set up and operate electronics equipment and instrumentation systems such as oscilloscopes, recorders, and analyzers.
  8. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

  1. Associate degree in electronics or related field or graduation from a two-year vocational/technical school, including courses in mathematics, physics, or electronics or high school graduation and two years of experience in the maintenance, repair, and construction of basic electronic and electrical instruments and equipment, or equivalent university/college training in electronics or physics.
  2. Skill in the use of electronic testing equipment, such as signal generators and oscilloscopes.
  3. Ability to operate standard machine tools, and perform skilled soldering.
  4. Ability to troubleshoot and maintain electronic equipment.
  5. Knowledge of the principles of electronics.
  6. Ability to read and interpret diagrams and specifications and to modify standard electronic apparatus.
