Function of Job:

Under general supervision of designated supervisor, perform work requiring skill in the trade of Electrician for the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical equipment, fixtures and wiring.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Fabricate and install control and distribution apparatus, including switches, relays and circuit breaker panels.
  2. Connect wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment using appropriate hand tools.
  3. Cut, thread, bind and route conduit lines, and pull wire through conduit as required.
  4. Dismantle and repair equipment, replacing defective wires, motor brushes, condensers and burned out fuses.
  5. Test continuity of electrical circuits in installed or repaired equipment, using electrical measuring instruments.
  6. Analyze malfunctions of electrical equipment, using ammeter, voltmeter, ohmmeter drawings and visual inspection.
  7. Perform preventive maintenance activities including periodic visual inspections, taping frayed or exposed wires and securing loose connections.
  8. Cut or bore through walls, ceilings or partitions.
  9. Read or interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, sketches and job specifications.
  10. Attend departmental training, such as safety and equipment training.
  11. Maintain records and service reports of materials and time expended.
  12. Follow recognized procedures, techniques and safety precautions in performance of duties.
  13. Direct work of helper or other electrician(s) as assigned.
  14. Participate in institutional professional development and training.
  15. Perform other related duties as assigned. 

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

  1. Technical/vocational school graduation or equivalent apprenticeship.
  2. New Hampshire State Electrician’s journeyman license.
  3. Knowledge of applicable electric codes.
  4. Knowledge of methods, tools and hazards of the trade.
  5. Ability to read and understand blueprints, electrical schematic diagrams and wire circuit drawings.
  6. Ability to compute voltage amperage and resistance factors using simple algebraic formulas.
  7. Ability to inspect equipment, determine malfunction and make necessary repairs.
  8. Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this job, including heavy work with exposure to inclement weather conditions for prolonged periods of time.
  9. Must be able to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary.
  10. Valid motor vehicle operator's license if required.
