Function of Job

Under broad technical supervision from designated supervisor, to perform highly complex chemical and physical analyses, procedures, and laboratory tests requiring a mastery of specialized techniques or ingenuity in selecting and evaluating approaches to solve specific problems. 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Design and perform exacting and unusual analytical experiments requiring a specialized knowledge of techniques and instrumentation.
  2. Analyze and interpret experimental results and effectively communicate the significance and implications of analyses, procedures and methods, verbally or in written reports.
  3. Collaborate with faculty in scientific research leading to publications.
  4. Operate sophisticated state of the art analytical equipment and instruments as required.
  5. Serve as consultant/instructor for faculty, staff and students in area of specialized expertise.
  6. May be responsible for supervising a chemical analytical laboratory, including necessary instrumentation.
  7. May supervise staff of lower level chemists and/or technicians, including planning work projects, training, establishing priorities, scheduling assignments, and evaluating and auditing work performed.
  8. Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
  1. University graduation with major in field of chemistry or equivalent, and five years of related experience or advanced degree in chemistry or equivalent and three years of related experience in a research oriented chemical laboratory.
  2. Ability to apply a research approach to solution of problems.
  3. Supervisory ability.
