Tammie Hubbard has been serving the UNH
campus for the past 11 years, starting in 1994 as a Food service Worker
in Stillings
Dining Hall. Over the past 11 years, Tammie has held many positions
and titles in University
Hospitality Services, including: Food Service Worker I {Stillings
(1994-96) and Huddleston (1996-1998)}, Food Service Worker II at Hudd
in a Hurry (1998-2000), Food Service Assistant for the Wildcatessen
(2000-2001), and now Food Service Shift Supervisor!
Tammie must rely on her strong communication and organizational skills
in order to perform the daily responsibilities for her position. She must
create a balance between customer service, purchasing requirements, clerical
duties, and staff supervision. In addition, her responsibilities also
include using online ordering systems such as Food Pro and other vendors
as well as daily banking for Philbrook
Dining Hall and Philbrook
Café; however with all her responsibilities, Tammie views the most
important and satisfying aspect of her position as customer satisfaction.
"Students are away from home," Tammie says, "and it is important that
they have places where they feel comfortable and secure. I may not be
their mom, but I can at least provide them with a friendly face and a
cup of hot chocolate. Sometimes all it takes is a smile and a hello to
make their day." Tammie's supervisor, Richard LeHoullier confirms her
commitment to our UNH students, stating "Tammie will be the first to say
how much she enjoys being around students. The students that work with
her look to her for leadership at work but also motherly advice for personal
problems that arise. Being a mother of three boys, Tammie can identify
with the students and their problems…She manages a very efficient retail
operation and is dedicated to making the Philbrook Café the best that
it can be for the department - and most of all - for the students."
Besides interacting with students, Tammie states, "I enjoy the people that I work with; they have become like family," serving as positive influences in furthering her career here at UNH. Two employees stand out particularly in having a positive impact on Tammie's work environment. "Arlene Canney, who was the secretary at Huddleston Dining Hall, gave me the constant encouragement to go back to school and get my associates degree. Without her I probably would not have had the confidence to take such a huge step in my life," Tammie explains. She also highlighted the encouragement made by Richard LeHoullier, her current manager and manager from 1996-98. "He has supported me in furthering my career within UHS. He also encouraged me to finish my degree as well as providing a friendly ear whenever I needed it. His calm exterior and a quirky sense of humor provide a working environment that makes coming to work every day an enjoyable and interesting experience."
While working, Tammie completed her studies receiving an Associates of
Arts degree in Journalism. Through all of Tammie's accomplishments, she
emphasized that the most important thing in her life is her family. Tammie
is currently engaged to Scott Burkland, also of UNH Hospitality Services,
and she is the proud mother of three sons: Marc (25), Derek (22), and
Ryan (17). "My children give me a joy unparalleled by any other detail
in my life," Tammie stated. "I feel as if their achievements are my achievements
as well." Her son Marc is the assistant coach of the UNH
Soccer team. He is a 2003 graduate of Colgate
University where he majored in Political Science and Sports Administration,
and he recently completed his Master's degree at UNH in Kinesiology. Derek
is a senior here at UNH. He has recently returned from studying abroad
in Costa Rica and is now working towards a double major in Spanish and
International Affairs, while playing intramural hockey at UNH and also
for a men's team in Dover. Her youngest son Ryan is a senior at Oyster
River High School where he plays soccer, basketball and baseball.
Ryan is planning to attend UNH next semester as an Occupational Therapy
major. When not working, Tammie says, "I find fulfillment in the simple
things in life such as taking my dog Sadie for walks in College Woods
or watching my sons play sports."
