With a background in Plant Biology and Landscape Design, how did Cecil Maxfield come to
be in Dimond Library cataloguing books and working to ensure successful outcomes to search
queries for materials? Cecil was initially drawn to the Dimond library because of the
fact that several of his friends were working there. What has kept him at library in the
six years subsequent is, in part, the fact that he is an avid reader. Cecil takes pleasure
from working in a position that entails exposure to an enormous quantity of books with a
great diversity of subject material. While cataloguing books may not allow him to delve
into the material at great depth, it has helped him generate a lengthy list of books that
he is eager to read.
Cecil has found the experience of serving on councils, committees and commissions at UNH to
be very rewarding, as it has allowed him the opportunity to meet and work with people from
other parts of the campus. He credits many of the individuals he has served with for their
positive impact on the UNH community. The members of the Operating Staff Council, with whom
he served for 4 years, were outstanding examples of tenacity and courage; the Campus
Aesthetics Committee, of good humor and resourcefulness; and the President's Commission on
GLBT issues, of courage, vision and commitment.
When asked what he enjoys most about working at UNH, Cecil stated that it was "being in an
environment where curiosity is fostered, discussion is encouraged and changes for the better
really are possible."
