The great thing about honors classes is the focus on group discussion that spills over into studying together. It’s easier to learn when you have to explain problems to one another. In my honors seminar on earth systems science, instead of a lecture, we worked in groups and did presentations on various topics, such as, “why dinosaurs became extinct” and “what’s the effect of nitrogen emissions on the environment?” My favorite was “how old is the earth?” We had to present answers from the perspectives of people living before 1750, between 1750 and 1850, and after 1850. It was great fun.
