Honors Community

Hubbard Hall Residents

Students say that participating in the University Honors Program allows them to benefit from the academic opportunities of a major research university while enjoying a smaller, collegial academic community. Start by living on the Honors floor of Hubbard Hall. University Honors Program events are often held there: an annual freshman meeting, faculty-student get-togethers, and pre-registration receptions, where honors faculty describe upcoming courses and meet prospective students in an informal forum. New for Fall 2008 Hubbard Hall will be hosting a living/learning floor, "Think Globally, Act Locally: The Individual in Community Context" .

Within the Program, we offer students opportunities for leadership: to develop programming in Hubbard Hall, to serve as Writing Fellows in courses, to participate in program governance through the Honors Program Student Advisory Board. Honors Student Representatives talk with prospective students, mentor underclassmen, and represent the program both on and off campus to a wide variety of public groups. Outside the Program, Honors students have leadership roles in a range of academic, athletic, and extracurricular organizations. Some work for the President's Commissions; others head up campus service organizations; many participate in Alternative Spring Break programs, or volunteer for state-wide children's programs like Seacoast Reads. The UNH student chapter of Engineers Without Borders built water treatment plants and irrigation facilities in a remote Thai village.

At UNH, we believe that being a full and contributing member of a community is an intellectual as much as an ethical value. At UNH, we call this “Engagement,” and we honor and support one other when we contribute on campus and off, to the Honors Program, the university, and the people and issues of New Hampshire, New England, the nation, the world.
