Committee Bylaws
- The Committee on Honorary Degrees and Awards will include the following: the University provost (ex officio) and the vice president for University Communications and Marketing (ex officio). It will also include the director of the Office of Presidential Events and Programs (serving as chairperson), faculty representatives of each college and school, including the University of New Hampshire at Manchester, as recommended by the Deans and presented to the Faculty Senate for approval, a student representative of the graduating class, a deputy of the student body serving a two-year term as appointed by the Student Senate, a Graduate School representative, a UNH Foundation representative, and an Alumni Association representative. The appointed members will serve for staggered terms of five years each and ordinarily will not succeed themselves (except for the student representatives).
- The Committee on Honorary Degrees and Awards is advisory in nature, and will prepare for approval by the president, the provost, and the Board of Trustees, a rationale document outlining the criteria met by selected candidates for Honorary Degrees and Granite State Awards, and explaining the recommendations for commencement speakers.
- The Board of Trustees has exclusive authority to confer Honorary Degrees and Granite State Awards on all campuses of the University System. The Board of Trustees has developed policy governing the granting of Honorary Degrees and Awards by institutions of the University System of New Hampshire in consultation with appropriate campus representatives. - Under exceptional circumstances, the president or the chairperson may convene the committee at any time to consider the nomination of an individual whose credentials were not examined under the procedures described above. If the individual is recommended for an Honorary Degree by a majority vote of the committee, the chairperson will process the recommendation through the appropriate channels.
