Marine Environmental History

coral reefs imageHMAP, History of Marine Animal Populations, is the historical component of the international project entitled Census of Marine Life funded by the Sloan Foundation. The focus of HMAP is to improve historical understanding of changes in marine ecosystems, and assess the human role in driving those changes. A significant commitment has been made by HMAP to support interdisciplinary graduate education in marine environmental history and historical ecology. Students will be expected to develop primary skills in either environmental history or marine ecology, and a working knowledge of the other. Graduate study will take place at one of the three HMAP institutions, with significant involvement in workshops and short courses at each of the institutions. The first of these joint initiatives was held in August 2001 in Esbjerg, Denmark.
