What does health mean to you?:My health is, perhaps, the most important aspect of my life. Life is no fun when one is sick or injured.
What do you do to make a Healthy UNH?:I found that I disliked sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time. So I bought a podium to raise my keyboard and a platform to raise my monitor. I also bought a StairMaster. Now I have the options of sitting; standing; or walking the stairs while I do my work.
How do you stay fit?:There are not enough hours in the day, or days in the week, to engage in as much exercise as I enjoy. I wake up before work nearly every day to play tennis, take a morning run by the ocean, go on a 20-30 mile bike ride, golf 9 holes, or kayak in the Great Bay. After work, I play doubles tennis whenever I can fit it in. On the weekends, I love to hike and am halfway through bagging the 48 4,000 footers in the New Hampshire White Mountains.
Do you have any tips for eating healthfully?:
I love vegetables and fruits. I start my seedlings in the winter, and it’s exciting to watch them grow to the size at which they’ll be ready to plant in the garden in the spring. It’s fun to eat fresh foods that I’ve grown and to cook with them as well.
How do you find motivation to stay healthy?:My husband has arthritis and cannot exercise as much as he would like. He is my motivation for my hikes in the White Mountains. For day-to-day motivation, I hate to be sick or injured, so I am strongly motivated to ensure that my body is fine-tuned and in the best shape possible at all times.
Have you made any tangible improvements to your physical or mental well-being by making positive changes in your life?:I made a significant career transition to leave corporate American and a high-paying, although extremely stressful, job with long hours. While I don’t make much money (comparatively-speaking) in my present role at UNH, I have gained something so precious that no amount of money can buy it: quality of life.
Anything else you would like to add?:
Just scheduled a sky dive. Going to try paddle boarding as well. I don’t think I’ve ever felt better than I do right now! To me, quality of life is of the utmost importance. Maintaining a healthy balance between my job at UNH; play time; exercising; and eating the right types of foods (which does include indulging my sweet tooth in moderation!) makes a huge difference in how I feel each day, and, in turn, improves my attitude and health.
