What does health mean to you?: 
To me the key to health is balance. While eating nutritious foods and exercising regularly is important, I think that making time & space for all the things you enjoy in your life is key to health.
What do you do to make a Healthy UNH?: 
To start, I am a Healthy UNH intern! This allows me the opportunity to spread the message of health and wellness across UNH’s campus through blogging about different topics as well as promoting health at events. I also work for Rochelle L’Italien, the Registered Dietitian at UNH dining services. My job there is to work on various projects that promote nutrition issues in the dining halls. For example, for the past two years I have been working on creating a database of photos showing proper portion sizes of meal items available at the dining halls across campus. These photos can be found on the menu’s available at UNH dining’s website and are a great resource to help people make sure they are getting the proper portion sizes while eating on campus. Aside from that I simply try to lead by example by leading the healthiest lifestyle I can.
How do you stay fit?: 
I have a pretty busy course load so I don’t get to exercise as much as often as I would like to. Because of this I make sure that I walk or bike to class from my house off-campus. This ensures I am at least getting some physical activity every day. The few times a week I do find the time to exercise I like to go on runs around campus. Getting out in the fresh air after a day of classes is really refreshing. I also started practicing Yoga last year. Not only do I gain strength and flexibility while I practice, but it also serves as a chance to quiet my mind and focus my thoughts.
Do you have any tips for eating healthfully?: 
The most important thing in my mind is balance. One thing I do is at each meal I try to have at least half of my plate be veggies. By doing this I ensure that I am getting some vitamins and nutrients at each meal and filling up on healthy foods. However, I always make sure I eat at least one thing I love per day. I don’t believe in depriving myself and I really think that eating healthy is all about moderation. Want to have an ice cream? Go for it! Just don’t have it at every single meal and make sure you are balancing it out with the healthy foods you need in your diet as well.
How do you find motivation to stay healthy?: 
My motivation to stay healthy honestly comes from the way it makes me feel. The more I exercise and the healthier I eat, the better I feel.
Have you made any tangible improvements to your physical or mental well-being by making positive changes in your life?: 
The biggest thing for me is how much better I feel since finding more balance in my life. My first year or two of school I struggled finding the time to get my work done, get enough sleep, exercise and eat well. Now that I do a better job at all of those things I find that I enjoy school a lot more and just feel like an overall happier and more energetic person.
Anything else you would like to add?: 
I would just add that I am so happy to be a part of the UNH community where health and wellness is so valued. UNH makes it easy to live a healthy lifestyle. The tools are all right here… you just have to figure out how to use them!
