What does health mean to you?:It means so many things to me that it’s hard to put into words, from doing what I want when I want, to living cancer-free (for 11 years), to fun times participating in sporting events with my husband and children. Since I did the Rome Marathon in March, I’ll quote a Roman poet and say, “The greatest wealth is health” (Virgil).
What do you do to make a Healthy UNH?:I challenge my colleagues and students to schedule a half marathon or marathon with me and I volunteer for athletic training students, which motivates me to work out in the Employee Fitness Center regularly. Also I participate in Healthy UNH events.
How do you stay fit?:I racewalked 21 marathons and ultramarathons in 2012 and have completed more than 50 in all. To train for races, I work out on a treadmill or outside, rebound on my teeny trampoline, use the machines at the Employee Fitness Center, and participate in 5, 10 and 15k races. I’m planning to add lap-swimming back into my routine this spring.
Do you have any tips for eating healthfully?:
Unfortunately, I love sugar and stout so I try very hard to surround myself with healthy foods and to keep the “bad” ones out of my line of sight.
How do you find motivation to stay healthy?:After a cancer diagnosis and treatment that filled all of 2002, I started signing up for races to reduce the risk of recurrence and discovered racewalking (I especially like to pass runners!). I wear a FitBit pedometer all the time as do many friends, my sister, and my children; our data is automatically downloaded to our computers so we engage in friendly competition to see who can get the most steps every day.
Have you made any tangible improvements to your physical or mental well-being by making positive changes in your life?:I have moved toward cross-training and better food choices in the last couple of years. Also, I used to work day and night. Now I try to leave the office every day at a reasonable hour and make every effort to avoid working at night and at least one weekend day.
Anything else you would like to add?:
I have very strong support from family and friends. My husband (of 35 years) does most races with me. He’s completed more than 90 marathons and triathlons, so I support him as a spectator when I’m not participating. I hooked my sister on marathons and ultras a few years ago and my daughter, a UNH alum, is a runner and triathlete also.
