Have you noticed the growing popularity of this up and coming super food? Now advertised and served at nearly every restaurant, avocados can be added to just about every dish, but I’m not complaining!
Avocado is a fruit and has a flavor and texture that works well with just about anything. It is packed with nutrients and has a nickname of the “alligator pear”, given its thick, bumpy skin. It has grown very popular in the American diet because of the high nutritional content it packs.
When people go to the grocery store avocados are typically unpackaged and in the produce section, which means that many have never actually seen the nutrition facts for this super food. An average sized avocado contains roughly 160 calories, 2g protein, 15g fat, and 9g carbs.
One of the best things about this fruit is actually its fat content, because it contains healthy fats that are good for your heart. Also, seven of the nine grams of carbohydrates are from fiber, which is great for digestion and maintaining a healthy weight. In fact, research has been done to show that avocados increase the nutrient absorption of other foods that you eat throughout the day. The makeup of avocados helps with the solubility of nutrients throughout the digestion process. Avocados have many vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. One nutrient that stood out to me was potassium. Did you know that an avocado has more potassium than a banana?
