Use your lunch break as a time to de-stress

Many adults in the work place get busy in their routine and forget to take a moment to de-stress each day. In theory, working through a lunch break or eating at a desk would save time and be more efficient. In reality, this isn’t improving your work ethic and may even slow you down if you don’t take any time for yourself. Utilizing your lunch break to eat, clear your mind, and step away from the work tasks will allow your body to reenergize and be more productive for the rest of the day. Better yet, if you eat smart on your lunch break with healthy, energy boosting foods you may avoid feeling that afternoon slump.

Tips for de-stressing:

  1. Go for a walk around your building. It could be as quick as five minutes, but the magic of some fresh air will boost your mood instantly.
  2. Socialize by eating in the employee lounge. Make a deal that you won’t talk about work during your breaks. It should be a relaxed friendly atmosphere to go to and get away from your office or desk.
  3. Listen to fun music for a mood booster, or listen to calming music with some breathing exercises. These can both be done right in the office but won’t disrupt others still working and will allow you to clear your mind during the break.

These are just a few ideas that can help you make the most of your next lunch break. If you think of your body as a vehicle on a long road trip, you have to pull off at a pit-stop, refuel, and then continue the trip. This is just like the work day in the sense that you cannot be productive for 8-10 hours at a time without a proper break. Taking time to focus on yourself could be very valuable to your productivity level and your overall mental health. If you make little adjustments like these, you will find yourself less stressed and more in control of your work environment. Remember, those breaks are there for a reason!
