With concern about the high and rising health cost in the United States, there is an even bigger concern about reducing or limiting the cost of medical services. One way to help reduce possible health costs is through prevention strategies. Prevention is not only the best way to reduce your chances of developing illness or a chronic condition, but it is also the key to reducing your chance of having to pay for unnecessary health costs.

Check out these simple prevention strategies you can do on a daily basis to improve your overall health and reduce your potential future health costs.

  • Follow the ChooseMyPlate.gov dietary guidelines to get a well-balanced and nutritious diet
  • Get the American Heart Association’s recommended amount of weekly physical activity
  • Limit alcohol consumption
  • Stop smoking or never start
  • Wear your seatbelt
  • Wear sunscreen and a hat when spending time in the sun
  • Get a good night’s sleep
  • Wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap
  • Know the facts about food safety
  • Find a way that works for you to reduce your stress such as hanging out with friends, listening to music or exercising

Other things to keep in mind to reduce health cost:

  • Know the testing and screening recommendations given by the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force
  • If not in a life-threatening situation, go to urgent care clinics when doctor’s offices are closed instead of the emergency room
  • Choose the generic version of prescription pills if possible
  • If you need lab work done, try going to independent labs instead of ones that are affiliated with a hospital
  • Know the symptoms of sexually transmitted infections and get yourself tested early on if you show any

Also, be sure to check out the United States Department of Health and Human Services Prevention website for more information on prevention strategies and ways to help prevent your chances of illness, as well as reduce your chances of needing medical interventions in the future!
