Moving Forward with Probiotics

UNH Health Services Pharmacy is now stocking 5 natural, food based supplements: two vitamins, 2 probiotics, and an immune system booster.

About Probiotics

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, the term 'probiotic' means" containing live microorganisms or bacteria, that when taken in adequate amounts confer a health benefit." Probiotics can refer to vitamins or herbal supplements containing probiotic bacteria. They can also be found in fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and miso; as well as in fortified dietary supplements in the form of capsules, liquids, wafers, or powders. Probiotics are commonly isolated from human and animal intestinal tracts, isolated and purified.

In general, probiotics can improve digestion, boost immune function, enhance bio-availability of nutrients and increase resistance to pathogens, infection, and inflammation. Studies have shown that probiotics can provide relief for patients who often develop antibiotic associated diarrhea by restoring normal intestinal flora. Other clinical trials have reported symptomatic relief for patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) by reducing diarrhea, abdominal pain, and bloating. Probiotics are not currently regulated by the FDA, but many strains have been designated as GRAS or generally recognized as safe. No drug-probiotic interactions have been reported. However, probiotics should be avoided by people with a compromised immune system.
