What is an osteopathic physician or D.O.?
An osteopathic physician or D.O. is very similar to a Doctor of Medicine or M.D. in terms of medical education and trainings (internships and residencies). They can both choose to practice in any specialty of medicine such as obstetrics, family medicine, pediatrics, surgery or psychiatry. Both need to pass examinations to obtain state licenses.
Osteopathic physicians receive extra training in the musculoskeletal system, including training in osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to diagnose illness and injury and to encourage the body’s natural tendency toward good health.
