What is yoga?

Yoga has been around for thousands of years and is gaining popularity in this country because people are recognizing its many benefits. Yoga is a form of exercise based on the belief that the body and the breath are intimately connected with the mind. By working with the breath as you move the body or hold the body in certain postures, yoga creates harmony. The yoga concept is that the body has a series of energy centers known as chakras. These energy centers are linked to our physical, emotional, and spiritual selves.

How should I prepare for class?

It's best to not eat for several hours before doing yoga and to dress in loose comfortable clothes. A yoga mat is not necessary but if you have one it’s great to use. You can bring a towel if you want or simply be directly on the floor. Be sure to let the instructor know if you have any specific health related concerns.

What happens during yoga classes?

We offer gentle yoga classes that incorporate the multi dimensions of yoga, utilizing the physical body, the emotional body and the spiritual body. The class always includes a centering in the beginning by doing the yoga breath and allowing ourselves to be present for the class. The class moves on into postures and movements that increase strength and flexibility in body, mind and spirit. We end with a deep relaxation, giving the body and mind the opportunity to rest.

As the semester moves on we try to hold our postures for longer periods of time and learn new movements that are more challenging, although the class continues to be open to new students each week. Each person is encouraged to participate at his/her own pace and level of comfort with the yoga pose.

What are the benefits of yoga?

Yoga impacts several systems in the body in a positive manner, e.g., the nervous system, digestive system, immune system, and circulatory system. Yoga reduces stress, decreases fatigue and increases self awareness and a sense of balance in our lives. As yoga allows you to relax, it has healing affects on the mind, body, and spirit.

Who teaches the yoga classes?

The classes are taught by certified yoga instructors. Claire Van Hoorn and Ruth Ablemann.

Who may attend the yoga classes?
