Nancy Kinner
Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering
Time at UNH:
20 years
What she does:
- Advises undergraduate and graduate students
- Teaches undergraduate and graduate courses
- Conducts research, and is currently Directing the Bedrock Bioremediation Center, cleaning up contaminated ground water that flows through bedrock
How she finds balance in her life:
- Having a wonderful partner
- Active with church and community activities
- Using IPAC and voice recorder to keep things organized
- Taking time early in the morning to exercise, two-mile walk with dog, having a good breakfast, and cultivating a morning spiritual activity
What she's most passionate about:
- Working with students -- teaching them and watching them grow
- Seeing tangible results on the research front
"Cleaning up the environment has always been a passion since I was a little kid."
The joys and challenges of being a woman (in the Engineering field):
- A special joy about being able to see women succeed in this profession, seeing women faculty and female students who then go out into the world and succeed, have great careers and happy lives
- Challenge--trying to balance a career and not get engulfed by it
"If I had it all to do over again, I probably wouldn't do much different."
Hopes and values to instill in others:
- Engineering will become a field where there are more women. Women can bring a lot of skills and different ways of looking at things to the table, especially in the environmental field and other areas of engineering
- For female students, instilling a sense of love for engineering and a love of what they do
- The ability to make choices in life, understanding that we can't be everything to everyone and do yourself justice
"You have to take time for yourself and make sure your inner self is happy."
