Ruth Abelmann
20 years at UNH, Associate Director Residential Life

Ruth Abelman

What makes you passionate about your work and/or life?

"I have a love of learning and a belief of learning communities... that's very important to me. I’m passionate about children, I am passionate about education. I'm interested in schools and communities, those are the things I connect with and I enjoy. So certainly, it's not just about me giving... I get something back. It makes me feel a part of something. It makes me feel whole and that's why I gravitate towards that."

What are the joys and challenges of being a woman?

"I celebrate the openness of women and our ability to be intimate. I don't think I would've gotten through the hard parts of my life if it weren't for my women friendships."

What hopes and dreams do you have for others?

"I am a huge believer in education. I think if we can teach students how to claim their education, how to feel like they are empowered to seek out learning opportunities, and seek out self awareness at the same time... I have faith that that makes the world a better place.

I love working with the residence hall staff. The idea that you can create communities where students can live and learn together. A place where the staff can take interest in individuals and reach out to them. A place where they notice things about them that show potential, tap them on the shoulder and encourage them to consider something that they never would've considered doing or getting involved in. I think students really respond to that. It can be life-changing."

How have you balanced your life?

"Sometimes I tell myself to lower my standards, to expect less of myself and not to be so hard on myself. Sometimes I tell myself to raise my standards and that I can do more, and that I don’t want to be complacent.

I do yoga, and this is a huge help. It's very centered and very balanced and I think when you do yoga it gives you more energy and it helps you to be clear about what is important and what is not…and I talk to my parents everyday."
