VAGINITIS
What is Vaginitis?
Vaginitis is the burning, itching, swelling, or infection of the vagina caused by:
- Bacterial Vaginosis
- Yeast
- Trichomoniasis
Vaginitis is very common. Most women will have some type of Vaginitis at least once in their lives.
A healthy vagina has "good" bacteria that keeps it slightly acidic. This keeps "bad" bacteria from growing too quickly. When the balance of this bacteria is upset, the "bad" bacteria grow too fast and can cause infections.
How do I get Vaginitis?
Unprotected sex is one way that Vaginitis is contracted and spread. Other ways might include:
- Antibiotics
- Pregnancy
- Douching
- Damp underwear
- Tight pants
- Vaginal products (sprays, lubricants, birth control devices)
What are the symptoms of Vaginitis?
The symptoms of Vaginitis vary, depending on the infectious germ. (see Bacterial Vaginosis, Yeast infections, Trichomoniasis). If you have symptoms of Vaginitis, see your Medical Provider.
How is Vaginitis diagnosed?
Vaginitis is diagnosed by a pelvic exam or physical exam and lab testing.
How is Vaginitis treated?
Vaginitis is easily treated with antibiotics.
How do I prevent Vaginitis?
To reduce your risk:
- Wash your vaginal area every day, rinse well and pat dry.
- Wipe your vagina and anus from front to back.
- Don't douche! This can upset the natural balance of the vagina.
- Wear cotton underwear.
- Don't wear tight pants or pantyhose in hot weather.
- Take antibiotics only when needed. They can kill "good" bacteria.
- Always use condoms with your sexual partners.
