Emergency Contraception (EC)
Breaking down the myths:
Myth:
Emergency Contraception can only be used up to 48-hours after unprotected sexual intercourse.
Truth:
EC can be used up to 5-days of having unprotected sex.
Myth:
EC is an abortion pill.
Truth:
EC is not the same as RU-486 (the abortion pill). It doesn’t affect an already established pregnancy and it can’t interrupt it.
Myth:
The Plan B progestin pill is the only form of emergency contraception.
Truth:
There are other methods, such as, high-doses of regular oral contraceptives comprised of combination of estrogen and progestin hormones and IUD’s.
Plan B and high doses of regular oral contraceptives are both available on campus at Health Services.
