Stress

“One of the best ways to handle stress involves taking a different attitude toward the various events in our lives. Attitude determines whether we perceive any experience as pleasant or unpleasant, and adopting the right one can convert a negative stress into a positive one.” Hans Selye

Stress is the body’s response to a perceived demand or threat. Positive stress occurs when we perceive that we have the physical and emotional resources to respond to the stressful event. Negative stress occurs when we perceive that we do NOT have the resources to adequately respond to the stress.

Learning how to manage your negative stress will be an important skill to learn in your lifetime. Since no two people are alike in how they respond to stress, it’s important to evaluate your own stress reaction and experiment with ways of coping.

Tips on Managing Stress

  • Become more self-aware. Know your limits and continually strive for the best that you can do within those limits.
  • Share your thoughts and feelings with others whom you trust. This is a healthy response to stress and may help you find new ways of coping.
  • Do something for someone else to get your mind off your own worries or concerns.
  • Get regular cardiovascular exercise. You will feel both invigorated and relaxed.
  • Get enough sleep. Most people under the age of 25 need about nine hours of sleep each night.
  • Educate yourself about what nutrition means.
  • Learn how to meditate.
  • Take action. In the time that you spend worrying about a task, you could probably get it completed.
  • Laugh more. The ability to laugh at yourself can go a long way toward relieving stress.
  • Earn the goodwill of others. Make yourself necessary in your personal and professional life.
  • Find your life purpose. Create a life that is purposeful and fulfilling.
